When our memories become our enemies, we don’t need to reject our memories – we just need to redirect our attention toward creating fresh memories. Sometimes issues from our past keep resurfacing in our mind and tormenting us with feelings of loss or inadequacy or any similar negative emotion. When our memories are thus becoming our enemies, we may think of fighting against those enemy memories and driving them out of our consciousness. However, memories cannot be driven out: they need to be crowded out – and that means that whatever attention we have; we try to create fresh memories, engage in meaningful activities that will lead to the formation of fresh memories – which will drive out the older not so pleasant memories.
