If we can take a hard line on one thing, then we can take a hard line on other things too. We all sometimes feel that we can’t give up certain temptations, that we can’t change ourselves for the better – but then we may be faced with temptations that we absolutely refuse to tolerate. We may lie, but if somebody asks us to steal, we may absolutely say no. We may sometimes steal: but if stealing involves hurting someone physically, maybe hurting at the cost of taking their life – we will absolutely say no. So whenever we draw a hard line somewhere: that shows us that we have the capacity to draw a hard line – and then if we can draw a hard line there, we can draw it earlier also. Thus we can take hope that we have the capacity to resist our lower urges and persist in self-transformation.
