The difference between lack of ability and lack of will is found in situations of necessity, even emergency. When someone says that they can’t do a particular thing, is that because they lack the ability to do that thing or is it because they lack the will? We can’t always know others ability, we can’t even know our own ability for that matter. But when it becomes a situation of necessity or even emergency: where something we value immensely is at stake or even our own life is at stake – then if we can muster the will to do something, then… and we start doing that thing actually, then that means our previously not doing that thing was not because we lacked the ability but because we lacked the will.
