To be optimistic without being realistic sets us up for unnecessary pain. To be realistic without being optimistic keeps us in unnecessary pain. When we are in a difficult situation, we naturally want to come out of that pain. For such progress, we need to be both realistic and optimistic. If we are only optimistic, then we may recklessly rush into situations that put us in further pain. But if we are only realistic, then we may not even try to come out of our difficult situation. The Bhagavad Gita offers us an excellent combination of optimism and realism through its all-round message of spiritual empowerment.
