Authenticity means to value in practice what we value in principle. When we try to be authentic, some people think that it means that they just become unrestrained in acting in accordance with whatever feelings or urges come up within them. No, that is just being undisciplined, unrestrained, inconsiderate. To be authentic is much deeper. Within us, there are many desires that come, but underlying those desires are our values. And what we value in principle, when we have the courage to value those in practice by our actions, then that is when we become authentic in a way that raises us up, not drags us down.
