Wanting to help others is a sign of our empathy, and acknowledging that there are some people that just cannot be helped is a sign of our humility. Whenever we see someone in distress, if we feel the urge to help them, that is a good sign: It indicates that we have empathy. At the same time, not everybody can be helped. For example, if somebody is an addict and has no desire to give up their addiction, then our giving money to help them will only fuel their addiction. That is how some people become co-dependents in others’ destructive behaviors. Acknowledging that there are some people we cannot help is a sign of humility.
