Let’s consider three possible endings of Krishna’s message to Arjuna.

Analytical ending (18.63): Though Krishna speaks nine more verses after this verse, this verse sounds like an ending. Consider its content: Krishna urges Arjuna to deliberate on what he has heard and then do as he desires. This statement is akin to a doctor’s conclusion after describing the diagnosis and outlining the options for treatment. This ending reveals Krishna’s distinctive disposition as God: he doesn’t impose his will on Arjuna and demand obedience; instead, he respects Arjuna’s independence and appeals to Arjuna’s intelligence.

Inspirational ending (18.66): Because the verses after this are essentially a glorification of the Gita (18.67-71), akin to a phala-shruti (the fruit of hearing), this verse can be considered an ending of Krishna’s message. Love doesn’t just mean giving freedom, letting others choose among their options; it also means giving guidance, telling the other person what we think is their best option. Therefore, after respecting Arjuna’s independence (18.63), Krishna declares his intention to open his heart to Arjuna, reveals his love for Arjuna and invites Arjuna to reciprocate. This three-verse sequence (18.64-66) culminates in both a call for loving surrender and a promise of loving protection (18.66). This second ending reveals Krishna to be an impassioned lover.

Textual ending (18.73): Krishna ends his discourse with an inquiry whether Arjuna’s doubts have been dispelled. His inquiry indicates that he is ready to reiterate, elaborate or elucidate any part of his message if that will help Arjuna to gain a better understanding. This third ending reveals Krishna to be a dedicated mentor ready to do whatever is necessary for helping his student.

One-sentence summary:
