The difference between forgiving and trusting is vital for us to understand if we are to not make forgiveness more difficult than what it needs to be. Forgiving is for the past; trusting is for the future. Forgiveness can and should be given irrespective of whether that person seeks it or deserves it.

Forgiveness is a gift that we give to ourselves so that we can put closure to the past. Trust, however, has to be earned by the other person through their reformed and repentant actions. If we equate forgiveness and trust and we start trusting the other person, they may hurt us, and when we are hurt, we may stop forgiving entirely.
