Krishna’s implication, Acharyas explain, is that Arjuna, don’t think you are the greatest well-wisher of the Kauravas. I am their greatest well-wisher. And you are thinking that shooting arrows at them is going to cause them pain, and you want to save them from that pain. But He says, ‘I know what is causing them greater pain. Far greater pain is caused to them because they are obliged to fight on the side of a person who has no morals, who is so vicious.’

Krishna is implying, ‘My plan is to free them from this circumstance and the terrible obligation that it brings. And they are good souls. They have done good karma. Once they are freed from the situation, they will be elevated to a higher situation. They will be liberated. So my plan for them is better than even your best plan. Therefore, be an instrument for my plan, and that will do. It is not just for you to win a kingdom. My plan will do the best for everyone. Once we understand that Krishna is the well-wisher, Krishna is the benefactor of everyone, then what happens is, śāntim ṛcchati, we become peace.
