Externally, frustration and renunciation may both look similar because in both a person is not endeavoring to go towards and gain and enjoy tempting sense objects. Internally, however, there is a critical difference. In frustration, there is the desire to enjoy those objects, but one fears that they don’t have the ability to enjoy those objects.

In contrast, in renunciation, there is no desire to enjoy those objects, even if one may have the ability to enjoy. Thus, renunciation actually helps one rise spiritually, whereas frustration keeps one stuck downward in material consciousness.
