Whenever something happens in the world, which is agitating, be it in the form of some temptation or some trouble coming upon us, how can we avoid getting agitated? The Bhagavad-Gita recommends two ways. One is by practicing śamaḥ (peacefulness), where we don’t let our mind get agitated by shifting our focus to something more positive, peaceful, and uplifting.
The second is even if our mind gets agitated, we don’t act out of agitation by getting ourselves physically engaged in something that consumes our attention and takes the energy of our consciousness away from our mind. This is damaḥ (sense control), where there is sense control even in the absence of mind control.
