Happiness comes not by increasing what we have but by increasing our appreciation for what we have.
The world often teaches us that to be happy we need to gain more and more things. That’s why the advertising industry specializes in glamorously depicting the many things that we don’t have, with the belief that if we pursue those things we will become happy.
However, no matter how many things we get, there will always be things that we don’t have. That’s why the way to happiness requires cultivation of appreciation for what we have, wherein we consciously notice and cherish the gifts we have in our life.
