Bhagavad Gita 18.56

sarva-karmāṇy api sadā

kurvāṇo mad-vyapāśrayaḥ

mat-prasādād avāpnoti

śāśvataṁ padam avyayam

Though engaged in all kinds of deed,

Taking full shelter in me indeed;

By my grace one comes to attain,

The abode that shall forever remain.

My dear Lord, you are so merciful that you allow me to approach you from whatever position I am in life, irrespective of the nature of the work that my present obligations require of me. You are so inclusive that you do not require me to renounce the world, or even renounce my work in the world, as is often a precondition in world-rejecting paths of yoga.

At the same time, O merciful Lord, whenever I let my love be directed away from you, I set myself up for heartaches when whatever I direct my love toward turns out to be not as wonderful as I had hoped. Worse still, I set myself up for heartbreaks when that relationship ends because of the inexorable passage of time. Through your call for exclusive devotion, you protect me from being disappointed or devastated.

O benevolent Lord, even within your exclusive love, you reveal your inclusive nature by helping me see all other loving relationships in the light of your love. Educate me to see everything and everyone I love as intermediate expressions of your love for me. Elevate me to reciprocate with them while remembering that I am ultimately reciprocating with you through them.

O unfailing Lord, when I am thus sheltered in your love, the downturns in those relationships, wrought by time, will not drag my heart down, but will instead inspire an upturn of my heart toward you.
