Maintaining discipline is not about crushing people who have opposite opinions, it is about communicating how we all have a shared interest that subordinates our various differences. Sometimes when we want to discipline someone, we may use our authority to try to crush them into compliance. Such an approach is neither sustainable in the long run because they will rebel, nor is it transformative because they will maintain resentment in the heart. More effective communication is when we give them a broader vision of why what we are telling then is in the shared interests of both of us.
