Self-discipline becomes easier not by growing in age, but by gaining leverage. Some people think that when they are trying to battle their lower desires, as they grow older, that battle will become easier. Not necessarily. Actually, if we wish to grow in self-mastery, what we need is to cultivate higher desires right now.

Yes, the lower desires may be very powerful in youth. But if we are cultivating higher desires, those higher desires will be our leverage in the battle against the lower desires, and they will enable us to win the battle of self-mastery as we grow in age.
