Bhagavad Gita 9.6

yathākāśa-sthito nityaṁ vāyuḥ sarvatra-go mahān

tathā sarvāṇi bhūtāni mat-sthānīty upadhāraya

 

As the mighty wind forever roams in space,

Yet always abides in the sky’s vast embrace,

So all living beings dwell forever in me alone—

Though I am their support, still stand on my own.

 

My dear Lord, help me grasp how you grant me autonomy within the framework of your authority. Just as the wind moves freely within the vastness of the sky, I am free to choose within the broader perimeter of your sanction.

O supreme spiritual master, may a balanced understanding of how I live within your ambit protect me from the two extremes of rationalization and resignation. I succumb to rationalization when I act according to my desires yet claim that I am doing your will. By such a fallacious claim, I knowingly or unknowingly shift the blame for my wrong actions onto you.

Protect me, O merciful Lord, from the opposite extreme—resignation, wherein I believe or claim that nothing is in my control, and I give up trying to fix what is actually within my power to fix. By such paralytic passivity, I end up becoming irresponsible, even culpable.

O merciful Lord, help me find the balance between these two extremes so that I may come to reharmonization with you. Let me keep in mind always the bigger picture—nay, the biggest picture—of your supremely auspicious plan for all. Within that plan, let me harmonize by being both resourceful and faithful: resourceful in doing my part to come closer to you through all situations, and faithful while waiting and watching as you do your part in your own inimitable, inconceivable, infallible way.

09.06 Understand that as the mighty wind, blowing everywhere, rests always in the sky, all created beings rest in Me.
