Now Krishna will say what will happen if we do not follow this cosmic cycle:
Bg 3.16
evaṁ pravartitaṁ cakraṁ
nānuvartayatīha yaḥ
aghāyur indriyārāmo
moghaṁ pārtha sa jīvati
Word for word:
evam — thus; pravartitam — established by the Vedas; cakram — cycle; na — does not; anuvartayati — adopt; iha — in this life; yaḥ — one who; agha–āyuḥ — whose life is full of sins; indriya–ārāmaḥ — satisfied in sense gratification; mogham — uselessly; pārtha — O son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); saḥ — he; jīvati — lives.
Translation:
My dear Arjuna, one who does not follow in human life the cycle of sacrifice thus established by the Vedas certainly leads a life full of sin. Living only for the satisfaction of the senses, such a person lives in vain.
evaṁ pravartitaṁ, pravartitaṁ means established so the cycle the chakra that is established by the Vedas nānuvartayatīha yaḥ, anuvartayati meants that which is followed adopted, na+anuvartayati means not followed, yah, that person. That person is aghāyur, that person life is full of Agha, means sin.
Indriyārāmo, and what is that person doing? He is trying to delight the senses indriyārāmo. And what happens to such a person? moghaṁ pārtha sa jīvati, So mogha is waste that word will again come in BG on several occausion like in 9.12, waste such a person whole life goes in vain.
So one who does not follow cycle that person’s life is filled with sin, sense gratification, he is in vain.
Now people generally have a definition of sin that is relative for example there is sin and there is crime. So crime is that which is considered to be legally wrong, and sin is one which is considered to be religiously wrong, morally wrong. So when the scriptures are the governing guide to the state then crime and sin are the same, because the government will act according to the scriptures, but when the government is not acting according to the scriptures, then crime and sin need not to be the same and when crime and sin are not the same then often that which is sin may not be considered to be a crime at all, for example today in most countries abortion has been legalized, so abortion is nothing but a cold blooded murder, and the tragedy is that there is a systematic program of disinformation which means not giving proper information by which people will come to know that the whole process of abortion is a process of killing a child so many time those who want to abort when they are shown picture using sonography how the child is in the womb and how the child is killed then the often change their mind no I cannot kill this, this is my child, so actually speaking it is a sin it is a gravest sin but unfortunately as per today’s law it is not considered a sin at all, so Srila Prabhupada considered cow slaughter and abortion as two gravest sin which current society is performing and because of which there are tremendous Karmic reactions coming up as consequences to this. There are documentaries made silent screams and others which show how the child is killed. There are various methods using which abortion is performed but many cases there is a clamp like object inserted in the womb, the infant is so small but he feels something is coming in the womb he feels terroristic and moves to another extreme in the womb and then the clamp like object come and tries to catches and the embryo escapes and then clamp like object tries to catch again and the abortionist the doctor who is holding on and trying to find and again the clamp like object comes and again the child escapes and again clamp like object comes but is a small space and the child will not be having any energy and finally the clamp like object catches the child usually they catch the neck of the child and then crushed the child body is tender and when it is crushed the clamp like object is having some sharp parts by which the tiny hands legs will be cut-off and all these are made into small parts because these has to be brought out from the womb and finally the head is crushed to small-small pieces and brought out. So it is very ghastly so when we see it we understand that it is very brutal but what happens is by today’s law it is considered to be legal but of course for example there are situation when the mother’s life is in threat it is genuine threat then abortion can be accepted because if one person’s life is threat to other person’s life then a person can protect one’s life in that case it is not so much killing then it is self-defense so that is different situation it is exceptional situation in most of the situations mother’s life is also preserved and child can also be brought out even if somebody is injured if doctor managed carefully.
So unfortunately crime and sins are divorced in many ways today and because of which people goes on doing immoral and sinful things and they think that everything is subjective, ok you believe it is wrong so you don’t do it we believe it is right so we will do it. So with this kind of social value set which people have life becomes filled with sinful people so aghāyur indriyārāmo, the scripture do not necessarily ban all sense gratifications, there is Dharma, Artha, Kama so Kama is also one of the purusharthas and kama when it is done within the precincts of Dharma, it is perfectly accepted so we will see in 7th chapter when Sri Krishna says I am Kama which is not contradictory to Dharma, so the point is Krishna is saying aghāyur indriyārāmo, so when people engages in sense gratification without considering the scriptures without considering the higher laws then that is aghāyur that makes their life filled with sins. aghāyur indriyārāmo. So today people neglect scripture, they neglect Yajna they neglect their performance towards duties of God, and then they seek enjoyment then what happens they want indriyārām. As we can see in previous verse Krishna has used …. Whatever is our need will be provided by nature. If we see demigods it is not that they have to live all ascetics, Indira have apsara in his court and he can have sense gratification and the Asuras also wants sense gratification but the difference is Devatas seek sense gratification while following laws of absolute truth the guidelines of the Supreme Lord where as Asuras defies those guidelines and seek enjoyment their off, therefor there is radical difference between the two. So that difference has to be bridged. How we will bridge it? By not changing God’s law to be in conformity with man’s laws but by elevating human understanding so that it is harmonized with divine revelation. So here Krishna is saying if one seek enjoyment indriyārāmo without understanding and harmonizing the will of the Lord, without doing Yajna then aghāyur, then the person engages in sinful activities and what is the result of this? moghaṁ pārtha sa jīvati, the whole life is Mogha, means it goes waste. Why does a life go waste so from spiritual perspective when a person doesn’t seek the absolute truth and simply continued on cycle of birth and death so in Ishopinishad these people are called as killers of the soul, these people live in vain why because they don’t know what is the ultimate goal of the life, and they don’t care to know and they live in violation of Supreme Lord.
SP purport: The yajña system is planned in such a way that sensory conscious persons may satisfy their desires without becoming entangled in the reaction of sense-gratificatory work.
So that means when there is Dharma, Artha and then Kama one doesn’t get entangled so much gradually one will be elevated, and now within these Yajnas there are multiple Yajna which is done for different Devatas, but ultimately the Yajesvar is Lord Krishna, as Lord Krishna said in 9.24 Lord says ahaṁ hi sarva-yajñānāṁ, bhoktā ca prabhur eva ca, how He is Bhokta, He is ultimate goals of all Yajnas, so all these Yajan are meant for us so that we become Krishna Conscious and if we doesn’t become Krishna Conscious then one doesn’t fulfill the purpose of Yajna.
So here Krishna concludes He gives instruction by contrasting so first He said do Yajna then you will stay free from karmic bondage, by satisfying the Devatas you will be satisfied, you will live happily in this way and you will attain Sreya that was 3.10, 11 & 12 and now in 3.16 He is giving alternate trajectories if you don’t do this then what will happen aghāyur indriyārāmo,
moghaṁ pārtha sa jīvati. One will live in vain.
