The significance of Dussehra can be conveyed in three words: burdening, burning, and blessing. There are many things that are burdening us from within: our ego, our selfishness, our attachments, our resentment. But there are times when we start realizing that these are burdens, and those are the times of good fortune. If then we find the means for burning those impurities from within us, just as gold becomes purified and effulgent by being put in fire, our inner world becomes purified through the fire of bhakti. And then the things which push us toward recognizing the burden and getting into the burning process, we start seeing them to be blessings. And thus, Dussehra becomes not just a festival of burning, but a festival of illuminating.
