In the Bhagavad-gita (6.30), it is said that for the realized yogi, Krishna is never lost to them, nor are they ever lost to him.

Loss is a constant fear in any relationship. For some reason or another, we may become alienated from each other: a close relationship can become strained, or affection can be replaced by animosity, or love by indifference. In contrast, Krishna assures us that if we invest in building our relationship with him, especially realizing his divine position and disposition, that relationship will never be broken.

He reiterates this in response to Arjuna’s specific question on this topic in verses (6.37-39). In verses (6.40-45), Krishna explains how yogis who deviate from the spiritual path return to it in their future lives and continue their efforts until they finally attain the perfection of being eternally reunited with him. These verses illustrate a key truth: Even if we go away from Krishna, he never goes away from us.

Can we ensure that we never go away from him? Yes, by understanding his position and disposition—that he exists in everything and everything exists in him. Unlike any other person, he is the supreme being. He exists inside us as the Supersoul; and we exist inside him, as the entire material existence is considered to be his body. This interpenetration of our existence with Krishna is not just a philosophical expression of his omnipotence and omnipresence. It is also a personal expression of his omnibenevolence, as indicated in the Bhagavad-gita (5.29): he is declared to be the well-wisher of all living beings. Indeed, the more we understand him this way, the more unshakable our faith becomes.

The nature of the material world is that it is a place of distress. It often presents challenges that may lead us to question even God’s very existence, let alone his benevolence. Nonetheless, Krishna does exist and does care for us. If we learn to see beyond material events and focus on the higher plan orchestrated by the Lord, we can sustain a faithful openness of heart. Such openness helps us navigate through dark phases, till we eventually realize how he was guiding us to a better place even during those times.

When we cultivate the remembrance of Krishna through our spiritual practices, such as chanting his holy names, we lay the groundwork for a faithful openness to Krishna and thereafter a faith-boosting realization of Krishna’s love. By knowing that our relationship with Krishna is the one relationship where our investment will never be lost but will be eternally rewarded, we can wholeheartedly invest our consciousness in his remembrance. Such investment of consciousness allows us to relish an increasing proximity to his eternal and loving personal presence.

To summarize:

  • Our relationship with Krishna is unique in that he will never go away from us, and if we don’t go away from him, that relationship will never break.
  • To stay aligned with Krishna through life’s ups and downs, we must remember he is within us, we are within him, and he is omnipresent, omnipotent and omnibenevolent.
  • By carefully cultivating Krishna’s remembrance, we foster the openness of heart necessary to realize his omnipotent and benevolent nature

Think it over:

  • What is a great fear in relationships, and how is that fear averted in our relationship with Krishna?
  • What do we need to do to ensure that we never go away from Krishna?
  • Reflect on your life and analyze whether you now see within what seemed a terrible event at the time the loving hand of God guiding you to a better place.
