Faith in God’s protection doesn’t mean outsourcing our rationality in decision making to God; it means ensuring our rationality doesn’t restrict our relationship with God.
When we encounter dangerous situations while trying to live a life centered on and devoted to God, we may wonder: what does expecting God’s protection mean in such a situation? Should we continue without caring for our rationality, which alerts us to the presence of danger? Should we entrust everything to God and leave it to him to protect?
Outsourcing rationality to God stems from an incomplete understanding of God and how he works. God doesn’t just exist somewhere far away; he also resides within us. Therefore, God can act not only through external means but also through us for manifesting his protection in this world.
This means we may need to expand our understanding of having faith in God’s protection. We must recognize that God equips us with resources, including intelligence and knowledge, to assess and address dangers. These gifts from God are meant to be used appropriately and resourcefully.
If we can identify a danger using our rational intelligence, we need to use that intelligence to evaluate what measures we can take to address it. Rationality involves factoring in reality and acting accordingly. Of course, in exceptional situations, our very relationship with God may require us to accept certain dangers. At such times, we shouldn’t let our rationality limit our openness to the mysterious or even miraculous ways in which God may act after we’ve done our part.
By industriously doing our part and leaving space for God to do his part, we can move forward in our relationship with him, staying open to how his protection manifests, even in ways that seem mysterious or miraculous.
Summary:
- Faith in God’s protection doesn’t mean abandoning rational considerations about dangers in a particular situation. Instead, it involves recognizing God’s presence within us, equipping us with intelligence and knowledge to act wisely.
- God works through us by giving us resources to protect and serve him, and these gifts must be used appropriately and effectively.
- While doing our part, we must remain open to God’s role in our lives, ensuring our rationality doesn’t limit our understanding of how his protection might manifest.
Think it over:
- How is the idea of rejecting rationality in the name of faith in God’s protection based on an incomplete understanding of God?
- How can rationality be used while serving God in dangerous situations?
- In what ways can rationality potentially limit us in our relationship with God during such situations, and how can we overcome this?
