Bhagavad Gita 10.7
etaṁ vibhūtiṁ yogaṁ ca
mama yo vetti tattvataḥ
so ’vikampena yogena
yu-jyate nātra saṁśayaḥ
One who knows my glories unending,
And my yoga untiring and unfailing,
Joins with me in a bond secure and pure—
Free from doubt, focused, forever sure.
My dear Lord, I am habituated to using the word yoga to refer to practices that connect my awareness with deeper layers of myself and ultimately with you, the supreme self. Yet in this verse you emphasize how that term works in the other direction too. It refers also to the ways in which you connect with me—more precisely, the ways in which you make yourself accessible and available so that I can connect with you.
O supreme sustainer, you call me toward you through so many gentle and subtle ways—the sublimely attractive things in this world, the nobler instincts deep within me, the fulfillment of living for a purpose bigger than my self-centered pleasure—all of which point to some invisible, inviting infinity.
By your illuminating mercy, O supreme illuminator, one day I will grasp the futility—and even the folly—of pursuing anything that takes me away from you. And as I increasingly realize the soundness and sweetness of life devoted to you, I will appreciate that choosing you as my life’s supreme purpose and my heart’s supreme love is not just a rationally defensible choice—it is a rationally irrefutable choice. Help me progress toward that clarity and conviction, thus moving me to offer my entire being to you and you alone.
