May you, as the supreme destination, be my mind’s final manifestation (8.06)
Bhagavad Gita 8.6
yaṁ yaṁ vāpi smaran bhāvaṁ tyajaty ante kalevaram
taṁ tam evaiti kaunteya sadā tad-bhāva-bhāvitaḥ
As your best shelter, whatever is your conception,
At the final moment of the body’s devastation,
That state indeed will be your destination.
From the mental will be a physical manifestation.
My dear Lord, you are all-powerful, yet you choose not to impose your desires on me, but to reciprocate with my desires. Though you want me to come to you, you arrange for that to happen only when I long for you more than I long for anything else in this world. Such longing is seen in what is my default shelter, especially at the time of the greatest danger, which is death.
O Almighty Lord, when my body is falling apart irreversibly, the place where my mind will rush to find shelter is shaped by what I have found shelter in most during my life before that instant. Let me find such shelter in you at that moment and at the present moment.
Grant me, O benevolent Lord, the intelligence and the persistence to seek refuge in you regularly and repeatedly throughout my life. Then, at the time of my greatest helplessness—at death—my mind will naturally run toward you. Even if it doesn’t get to you, you will mercifully draw it toward you. Thus will my mental aspiration manifest as my ultimate destination, and I will be united with you for life and love everlasting.
