Bhagavad Gita 3.9
yajñārthāt karmaṇo ’nyatra
loko ’yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ
tad-arthaṁ karma kaunteya
mukta-saṅgaḥ samācara
“Work done as a sacrifice comes with no chain,
But work done selfishly brings bondage and pain.
Therefore, act always for the higher cause,
Be dutiful, stay free from attachment’s jaws.”
Please, O Lord, let me remember that karma is always meant for dharma. My activity should align with harmony, enabling me to belong harmoniously to the larger units I am a part of.
The more I perform karma without consideration of dharma, the more my actions become disruptive or even destructive, and the more I become implicated in suffering their consequences. My dear Lord, my conception of the larger unit that I belong to may initially be small—limited to my family.
Over time, it may extend to my community, my country, humanity at large, or even the Earth as a family. When this conception evolves to its zenith, then I understand that it is you, the Supreme Reality, who contains and sustains all larger realities, all the realities that sustain me, which are ultimately subordinate to you. Therefore, when I act in the mood of service to you, that is when I stay free from bondage and march toward liberation—for a life of endless love and joy with you. Help me, my Lord, to evolve in this journey from selfishness toward divine selflessness by cultivating the ethos of working always in a mood of service to a higher cause.

03.09 Work done as a sacrifice for Viṣṇu has to be performed; otherwise work causes bondage in this material world. Therefore, O son of Kuntī, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain free from bondage.
