To grow steadily, focus on progress, not on success. Whenever we start doing something challenging, such as focusing our mind and learning to gain mastery over our mind, we often discourage ourselves by feeling and fearing that we are not achieving success, that our mind is repeatedly going out of control.
Instead of worrying about success, if we start working on progress, that means whenever the mind wanders, we just bring it back gently and firmly, as the Bhagavad-Gita recommends in 6.26. Then we will find, by that repeated exercise of refocusing the mind through that gradual process, we will make progress and eventually attain success.
