Let’s explore what differentiates the two so that we can detect and reject any fanatical tendencies that may be lurking in our heart.
Approach to issues: Fanatics tend to have a hot head. When confronted with people who hold differing or opposing opinions, fanatics don’t consider that they themselves might not have all the facts or that they might lack the perspectives necessary to understand the issue holistically. Due to their tendency to make snap judgments, they fight over small things and escalate minor technicalities into major polarization points. In contrast, spiritualists tend to have a cool head. Knowing that reality rarely resides in black and white, they are open to contemplate various shades of gray and and comprehend the nuances associated with complex multi-faceted issues.
Approach to people: Fanatics tend to have a cold heart, especially toward those who dare to differ from them, let alone oppose them. They jump to the conclusion that such people have not just evil motives but also evil morals. Alarmingly, their cold-heartedness can degenerate to cold-bloodedness wherein they feel no remorse, or may even feel a sense of moral righteousness, in destroying their opponents. In contrast, spiritualists tend to have a warm heart. They understand that we all share the same spiritual essence as parts of the Divine. Knowing that the things that unite us are far bigger than the things that separate us, they try to act as non-judgmental benefactors of everyone (12.13). Without disturbing the minds of others (12.15), even if those people are attached or uninformed (03.26), spiritualists try to creatively and compassionately help everyone elevate their consciousness from wherever their present level may be.
