Humility is the ability to remember that our ability is not actually our ability. When people have some extraordinary ability, it is very easy for them to become proud and lose their humility. To maintain humility while also having ability, what we need to do is to remember that our ability is not actually our entitlement. It is an endowment given to us by God. The Bhagavad Gita says that it is Krishna who manifests as ability in human beings, “pauruṣaṁ nṛṣu” in [Gita] 7.8. When we just remember that while we may have developed our abilities by our training and our practice, the starting point of those abilities are gifts given to us by God, then we can have ability and humility both.
