abhisandhāya tu phalaṁ
dambhārtham api caiva yat
ijyate bharata-śreṣṭha
taṁ yajñaṁ viddhi rājasam

Synonyms:

abhisandhāya — desiring; tu — but; phalam — the result; dambha — pride; artham — for the sake of; api — also; ca — and; eva — certainly; yat — that which; ijyate — is performed; bharataśreṣṭha — O chief of the Bhāratas; tam — that; yajñam — sacrifice; viddhi — know; rājasam — in the mode of passion.

Translation:

But the sacrifice performed for some material benefit, or for the sake of pride, O chief of the Bhāratas, you should know to be in the mode of passion.

abhisandhāya tu phalaṁ, when one is attached to the fruits, abhisandhāya that is attached.

dambhārtham api caiva yat, dambhārtham out of dambha out of attachment, api caiva yat

ijyate bharata-śreṣṭha, O bharat srestha if one does

taṁ yajñaṁ viddhi rājasam, there are two aspects to it, there is attachment to the result and there is attachment to doership.

abhisandhāya tu phalaṁ, Yes I should get the result.

dambhārtham api caiva yat, just see how much Yajna I am doing, how punyavan I am, everybody should know how punyavan I am, so this kind of material result and material doership is in mode of passion.

We discussed this in 15th chapter so the idea is if I think I am the doer and I get the result then I am simply in the mode of material consciousness. So I am motivated by same idea of eating mating sleeping and defending, getting them in better way through religion and that is not anything glorious. taṁ yajñaṁ viddhi rājasam.
