Now we go to the section of different kinds of Yajna Dana Tapa

We look at understanding the three modes based on external characteristics.

When Krishna is talking about three modes the focus is on understanding how this can help us in understanding the level of faith of a person.

Bg 17.7

āhāras tv api sarvasya
tri-vidho bhavati priyaḥ
yajñas tapas tathā dānaṁ
teṣāṁ bhedam imaṁ śṛṇu

Synonyms: 

āhāraḥ — eating; tu — certainly; api — also; sarvasya — of everyone; trividhaḥ — of three kinds; bhavati — there is; priyaḥ — dear; yajñaḥ — sacrifice; tapaḥ — austerity; tathā — also; dānam — charity; teṣām — of them; bhedam — the differences; imam — this; śṛṇu — hear.

Translation: 

Even the food each person prefers is of three kinds, according to the three modes of material nature. The same is true of sacrifices, austerities and charity. Now hear of the distinctions between them.

āhāras tv api sarvasya, Actually the food that different kinds of people eat

tri-vidho bhavati priyaḥ, food that different people consider dear that can be divided into three categories.

Similarly yajñas tapas tathā dānaṁ, similarly Yajna, Tapa and Dana can also be divided into three categories

teṣāṁ bhedam, the bheda among them, imaṁ śṛṇu, O Arjun please hear about the bheda, hear about three categories of food and three categories of Yajan, Dana and Tapa.
