Now Krishna explains the same point and will explain it further
Bg 3.29
prakṛter guṇa-sammūḍhāḥ
sajjante guṇa-karmasu
tān akṛtsna-vido mandān
kṛtsna-vin na vicālayet
Word for word:
prakṛteḥ — of material nature; guṇa — by the modes; sammūḍhāḥ — befooled by material identification; sajjante — they become engaged; guṇa–karmasu — in material activities; tān — those; akṛtsna–vidaḥ — persons with a poor fund of knowledge; mandān — lazy to understand self-realization; kṛtsna–vit — one who is in factual knowledge; na — not; vicālayet — should try to agitate.
Translation:
Bewildered by the modes of material nature, the ignorant fully engage themselves in material activities and become attached. But the wise should not unsettle them, although these duties are inferior due to the performers’ lack of knowledge.
prakṛter guṇa-sammūḍhāḥ, guṇa-sammūḍhāḥ means? mūḍhāḥ means deluded, sammūḍhāḥ means completely deluded Samyak Rupena Mudha, so one who is deluded by prakṛter guṇa by the three modes of material nature sajjante guṇa-karmasu, such a person becomes attached to the Guna Karma, the word Guna doesn’t refer to qualities here it refers to modes if we think it is qualities we will get confused as it doesn’t make sense over here, guṇa-karmasu means activities which are impelled by three modes,
tān akṛtsna-vido mandān, so who does like this? Who becomes attached? akṛtsna-vido, one who does not know properly and mandan, means lazy,
kṛtsna-vin na vicālayet, na vicālayet means does not disturb, so here second time Krishna is repeating na buddhi-bhedaṁ janayed at the start of this section, so now He is again repeating na vicālayet which means don’t disturb, so why don’t disturb because it disrupt people’s gradual advancement
Vedic scripture gives two ways of advancement gradual way and rapid method. Gradual method is like Karma Kanda do your duty and also enjoy – Dharma, artha, kama and Moksha for many life times.
Don’t disturb! Why? Because then one disturb people’s gradual advancement, dovetailing people’s propensity for the sake of slow progress. KK give dhram artha kam moksha in many life time…social order is maintained while people are also provided senses gratification there is arrangement for artha and kama, for most people material pleasure is necessity and even for devotees also only when we are very advance we can survive only on spiritual. In sadhaka stage we have nice music, prasadam are we getting material pleasure or spiritual pleasure, it is both, if it is spiritual pleasure then same kirtan tune month after month also is good for us but we need to change tunes. But we differentiate, this devotee sings nicely … what is there for Prasad, if we are testing Krishna through Prasad then whatever will be the Prasad we will be having same level of enthusiasm, but we don’t, and this is not necessarily bad also, there is variety in spiritual realm also… it is not that to prove that I am a devotee I have to take same Prasad everyday… I am transcended to the taste … we don’t have to transcendence but we have to spiritualize…
Point is in sadhaka stage we want to give up all material happiness but because we are living at material level of consciousness at material level of reality right now, therefore spiritual happiness comes to us through material means. When we get involved in spiritual activities that time material aspects also plays a role, in being attracted or not being attracted, this is not bad, just arrangement we gradually elevated to spiritual level where material level doesn’t matter for us.
There are people who are not sadhaka but are religious people, para Dharma and apara dharma, in darma; Dharm, arth, kama and moksha is also mentioned which is Apara Dharma but we are following para Dharma where focus is to develop love of Krishna, here Dharma, Artha, Kama and moksha are put aside. In apara Dharma goal is Dharma, Artha, Kama and goal is not Krishna, they acknowledge Krishna but they are not purely devoted to Krishna, But when people come to “dharmaḥ projjhita-kaitavo ’tra paramo nirmatsarāṇāṁ satāṁ” from SB, 1.1.2, here SB talks about Para Dharma at this place Dharma, artha, kama and moksha is put aside so at that level of reality the focus is not Dharma, artha, Kama but focus becomes prema of Krishna so that is the level where people are ready to settle and become fixed on Ultimate Truth
Krishna is saying don’t try to rush people to the higher level of renunciation so when people are not ready for Moksha if you push them for moksha immaturely that will create problems for them they will not be able to do that, so kṛtsna-vin na vicālayet, so Krishna says do not disturb these people so what will happen earlier in the chapter He talked about Mithya achras Uchyate, when a person is pushed to renounce the world and if he doesn’t have the capacity he will become hypocritical at that time, that is undesirable.
Now in this chapter this question raise the point that we also have devotees in the renounced order, in early days of our movement it is thought that if you wanted to become a serious devotee you have to be renounciate and if somebody is not renounciate that means that, that person is not a serious devotee, but this is a misconception, one’s seriousness is not determined by one’s ashram but one’s conviction / commitment that is important at the end of our life Krishna will not see which ashram we belong but how much asray of Krishna we have taken. So it is not where (which ashram) we are situated but how (how much asraya we have taken / our level of surrender and consciousness) we have situated. So here Krishna is saying different people have different natures so depending on their convictions depending on their level right now they have to be situated accordingly if we try to push them fast it won’t work, so again we have to remember that Krishna is not talking about Bhakti Yoga at all He is talking about comparision between Karma Yoga and Jayana Yoga.
So essentially He is talking if people are not qualified to give up their Karma.
So essentially there are three levels Karma Yoga-Karma Kanda-Gyana Yoga (don’t go for Gyana Yoga, even if Gyan Yoga is higher because people are not capable of doing it, do don’t do it and don’t instruct them to do it, let them act in this world). So Arjuna you act in Karma Yoga people may be in Karma Kanda, you set a good example. You will be elevated, you will be contributing in social order. And since you are acting with detachment you will be elevated.
If they are prematurely renounced they will disrupt their consciousness, their spiritual life and the society.
prakṛter guṇa-sammūḍhāḥ, one who is deluded by the modes of material nature
sajjante guṇa-karmasu, attached people when they act they become attached when they do guna-karma they become attached, previous verse says na- sajjante, don’t become attached but here they will become attached, but even if they are becoming attached na vicālayet, don’t disturb them because gradually they will develop realization to develop detachment but if they are prematuarely renounced that will disrupt their life entirely they will disrupt society also kṛtsna-vin na vicālayet
SP Purport: Such bewildered persons may be engaged in such primary moral principles of life as nonviolence and similar materially benevolent work.
Now here SP makes a very significant statement: Lord Kṛṣṇa advises us not to disturb them and simply waste valuable time. But the devotees of the Lord are more kind than the Lord because they understand the purpose of the Lord. Consequently they undertake all kinds of risks, even to the point of approaching ignorant men to try to engage them in the acts of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, which are absolutely necessary for the human being.
So here SP is saying devotees are contradicting Krishna’s will actually they are not contradicting they are fulfilling Krishna’s will so ultimately with in this progression Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha, Krishna
ultimately wants all souls to come back to spiritual world and to be with Him and to be forever happy with Him that is what Krishna ultimately wants, but when He wants it ultimately transitionally there is a progression, the soul cannot suddenly give up things there is a progressive treatment happening for example if a child is in hospital at that time parent want child to come back from hospital but that doesn’t mean if the child is in middle of a treatment they parent will not say leave everything and come back that sort of coming back may not be of much use. Child is in hospital he has to get treated and then come back home so there is a process of gradual treatment Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha which will take Bahunam Janma ante and there is a rapid treatment which involves practice of Bhakti Yoga, that is what SP is talking over here that is devotees think evenif people gets little disturbed let them practice spiritual life let them take fast track treatment, the fast course of treatment may involves more sacrifices. Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha is slow track and Bhakti is fast track. So Lord’s purpose is done by devotees going to the people and telling please do and this.
