Our self-image, our conception of who we are, is usually generated by others’ opinions of us, especially those opinions that we accept uncritically. Why do we accept such opinions? Because they are often based on reality, though they rarely reflect the full reality.
Let’s look at three levels of self-images:
Self-image based on our inabilities: We all have certain things that we aren’t good at. If those inabilities are highlighted by our family or our social circle, especially during our formative years, those inabilities may become the basis of our self-image. If we have a low IQ that obstructs us in doing well in academic tests, we may think of ourselves as losers. Such a self-image that centers on our inability is disempowering: it takes away our confidence and energy to do even the things that we can do.
Self-image based on our abilities: We all have certain things that we are good at. If those abilities are emphasized by others during our upbringing, they may become central to our self-image. If we have a high IQ that enables us to thrive in academic tests, we may think of ourselves as winners or toppers. While a self-image based on ability is more empowering than a self-image based on inability, even such a self-image leaves us prone to instability. Why? Because our ability may not be duly recognized; or it may be dwarfed by someone else’s ability; or it may decline with time.
Self-image based on our actual identity: The Bhagavad-gita explains that beyond whatever abilities we lack or we have is our indestructible self (02.17). When our self-image is based on our spiritual essence, that self-image is steadily empowering. It enables us to stay consistently positive and purposeful, thereby managing our inabilities, unleashing our abilities and manifesting our best.
One-sentence summary:
Base our self-image not on our inabilities or our abilities, but on our actual identity.
Think it over:
- What’s wrong with a self-image based on our inabilities?
- What’s wrong with a self-image based on our abilities?
- How is a self-mage based on our actual identity the best?

02.17: That which pervades the entire body you should know to be indestructible. No one is able to destroy that imperishable soul.
