Self-control is not necessarily suppression of the self, it is selection of what is worthy within the self. When some people are told to discipline themselves and not just give unfiltered vent to whatever emotions are there inside them; then they may respond by saying you are suppressing me. While that could sometimes be happening, it is also possible that they are mistaking suppression to be selection. We all have feelings within us that are not just inappropriate but are also unworthy. And the nature has given us the mechanism to keep those feelings within us and it is important for us to select the best part of us and bring it out, not the worst part.
