Making assumptions is not a problem, not being aware that we are making assumptions is a problem. Whenever we make assumptions about people thinking that, “Oh, this person is like this or that person is like that” and later we realize that our assumptions were wrong, we may start thinking, “Why do I make such assumptions?” and we may start beating ourselves up for having made those assumptions. However, to be human is to make assumptions because we only have finite information, and we have to make decisions based on that finite information. Therefore, sometimes those decisions require making assumptions. What we can do is not try to stop making assumptions, but become more aware when we are making assumptions, and then start evaluating those assumptions appropriately, either by cross-checking with that person or with other people.
