When people do something they like, say, watching a sports match, they often get so absorbed that they don’t even notice discomforts such as sitting in a crowded sweaty stadium on a hard small seat.
Absorption has the capacity to lift us out of our circumstances. To get out of boring, irritating or distressing circumstances, people frequently seek absorption in things like TV, novels and video-games.
All worldly things are destructible, as is their attractiveness, whereas Krishna is eternal and eternally attractive.
Though any kind of absorption may offer some relief, absorption in Krishna offers the greatest relief – and not just relief, but also satisfaction, nourishment and ecstasy.
Why?
Because Krishna has many unique attractive features some of which can be summarized in the acronym AIM: all-attractive, indestructible and merciful.
- All-attractive: Whatever attractiveness is present in anything is simply a spark of the supreme attractiveness of Krishna, as the Bhagavad-gita (10.41) states. So absorption in him is far more enchanting and enriching than absorption in anything else.
- Indestructible: All worldly things are destructible, as is their attractiveness, whereas Krishna is eternal and eternally attractive. So absorption in him can provide fulfillment eternally.
- Merciful: At present we may not find Krishna so attractive due to the impurities in our heart. But we can take hope from his supremely compassionate nature. He mercifully manifests himself in this world as many accessible manifestations such as the holy name, the Deities and the scriptures. He also guides us from within as the Supersoul and without as our spiritual guides. If we tap his mercy by practicing bhakti-yoga sincerely, he will magically purify us – something that nothing else can do. And as we become progressively purified, our attraction to him will increase and so will our joyful absorption in him.
Thus by meditating on Krishna’s unique AIM qualities and making him our life’s aim, we can attain the ultimate absorption.
