Discipline often feels like a fight with ourselves, like we are being robbed of pleasures that seem rightfully ours. But the Bhagavad Gita (3.37) flips this view. Though the war is within you, it’s not with you. It’s actually for you. What you are fighting against is not your core self; it’s the false self made of short-sighted, selfish cravings – like lust – which are entrenched inside us, driving us, dominating us, destroying us. This isn’t who we truly are. We are souls seeking meaningful and lasting connection, not meaningless and fleeting titillation. Discipline is therefore a war to free the self from inner forces that are misleaders, invaders, predators. Fight for your true self.
