In today’s political discourse especially in the West,
there’s a lot of focus on identity—
race, gender, orientation. In India, there’s a similar focus on caste and region.
Such focus can help reduce discrimination and address the universal human need to be seen, heard, valued.
Unfortunately, this focus can easily become excessive. And
we end up with identity politics, which
reduces our entire identity to these categories alone.
The Bhagavad Gita (5.18) takes us deeper: the wise see all with equal vision.
Beneath the various aspects of our social identity lies our spiritual essence. We all are indestructible souls. Knowing this is the foundation of a self-worth that can never be taken away from us.
Such a vision grounds our search for dignity in eternity.
When we see one another as souls first,
diversity remains, but doesn’t divide.
It becomes the palette of colors on a shared canvas of spirituality.
