After nearly two years of bitter fighting between Israel and Hamas, a peace deal has finally been signed in the Middle East.
While the political efforts deserve praise, lasting peace demands attention to psychological, philosophical, and spiritual dimensions.
Psychological: Wars spiral through both fear of power and hunger for it. Such destructive fearfulness results from a perverse determination in the mode of ignorance outlined in Bhagavad Gita 18.35. Israel, surrounded by hostile neighbors, needs to overcome this fear.
Philosophical: Wars arise when ideologies blind people to others’ humanity and convince them they alone are right—a mindset that characterizes knowledge in the mode of ignorance, as described in Bhagavad Gita 18.22. Palestinians need to overcome such radical Islamist indoctrination.
Spiritual: Conflict stems from inner discontent. True contentment comes by linking with the Divine in a bond of universal spiritual love that transcends polarizing sectarian affiliation, as taught in Bhagavad Gita 5.29.
Only when the heart finds peace within can humanity find peace without.
