During our lives, we sometimes wonder, “Whatever I do, does it count? Does even my existence count?” Especially when we try to do something good and it doesn’t produce any noticeable result, we may feel discouraged: “Whatever I am doing is so tiny. Does it have any value in this big bad world?”
Yes, it does. The Bhagavad-gita explains we are parts of a reality far bigger than ourselves — the ultimate reality, Krishna. We are not destructible bags of matter hurtling from birth to death in a meaningless journey. We are indestructible souls on a multi-life journey of spiritual evolution. As parts of the divine, we are meant to become channels of his light to shine through us. We are all called to become instruments of the divine (11.33).
When we connect with him through devotion and contribute on his behalf through dedication, we all can make a difference. Given that the world is so big and we so small, the difference we make isn’t seen on most days. Still, on some days, in some ways, we get some evidence that we have made a difference.
On other days, inner impurities and outer insecurities overwhelm us so much that they block out all inner light, leaving us disheartened. On these dark days, we need to draw light by remembering the moments when our efforts have made a difference.
Such recollection rejuvenates us and energizes us to re-affirm our connection with the divine. Ultimately, that connection is what will lift us out of all darkness and enable us to help others too. Taking whatever steps we can to establish that inner connection is the ultimate difference we all can and should make.
Think it over:
- What makes us doubt the value of our existence and endeavors?
- How does Gita wisdom affirm our potency to make a difference?
- During your nights of doubt, what memories can you draw on to dispel that darkness?

11.33 Therefore get up. Prepare to fight and win glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a flourishing kingdom. They are already put to death by My arrangement, and you, O Savyasaachi, can be but an instrument in the fight.
