Whenever we try to change ourselves for the better, fear whispers, “If you fail, they’ll laugh at you.” Such fear will hold us back, till we remember one transformative truth: we don’t have to be free from fear to be courageous.

Courage doesn’t mean fear disappears; it means something else becomes more important than fear. If we seek a purpose that’s bigger than our fear, that purpose will give us the strength to move ahead despite the trembling.

A higher purpose available to all of us is to do something good for others, as the Bhagavad Gita (5.25) indicates. And the better we become— in our virtues and our skills— the greater the good we can do.

So let’s not worry about eliminating fear— let’s focus on elevating our purpose beyond it. Then fear won’t be able to stop us, as our purpose powers us toward lasting inner and outer change.
