The problem with desire isn’t that it’s bad—
it’s that it drives us mad.
Here, MAD is an acronym that shows the three things destroyed by uncontrolled desire:
M – Morality, A – Awareness, D – Discernment.
When desire pushes us to do what we know is harmful, our morality is lost.
When desire casts such a spell that we don’t even realize what we’re doing, our awareness is lost.
When desire blinds us so completely that we know what we’re doing but just don’t care about the consequences, our discernment is lost.
No wonder the Bhagavad Gita (3.38) warns that desire covers our wisdom—
like smoke covering fire.
Let’s stay alert.
Whenever we feel our morality, awareness, or discernment slipping, let’s recognize desire’s grip and find strength in our spirituality before desire drives us truly mad.
