When something bad happens in your life due to factors beyond your control, have you ever wondered: Was this destiny? Could I have done anything to avoid it? Or was it just meant to happen?

To understand whether destiny can be changed, consider the two meanings of that word.

One meaning refers to what happens to us, as when we say, “This was my destiny.”

The other is where we reach in life, as when we say, “This talented cricketer has fulfilled his destiny with that performance.”

Destiny in the first sense refers to our situations—and some situations simply can’t be changed. In that sense, destiny is fixed.

But within those unchangeable situations, what we choose to do is up to us. These choices reshape where we end up.

The Bhagavad Gita shows this in Arjuna’s dilemma (2.14). He couldn’t stop the war—that destiny was fixed. But he could choose whether to fight and gain glory or refuse to fight and gain infamy.

Destiny as our situation is to be accepted.

Destiny as our destination is to be shaped.
