Life is often unfair. In projects, relationships, communities, we often get less than what we give— sometimes heartbreakingly less. But what ruins us is not the world’s unfairness. It is our unfairness to ourselves— when we let our mind fixate on the world’s unfairness, militate futilely against it, or vegetate passively in it. Thankfully, there is a better way. While the world’s unfairness is a brutal reality, there exists above it a still bigger reality. The Bhagavad-gita (18.58) assures us: if we become conscious of our Lord and his supreme fairness, he will guide us through the world and its unfairness. The more we meditate on him in a mood of prayer and service, the more he energizes us with calmness, clarity, and confidence. We discover a path to a better future in spite of the unfair present. So stop being unfair to yourself. Instead of fixating on the world’s unfairness, focus on our Lord’s fairness.
