Have you ever wondered whether telling the whole truth is always the best approach, especially if it might cause unnecessary hurt? Or have you noticed that sometimes telling a difficult truth can be empowering for the other person? How do we find the balance between these two? Pertinently, the Bhagavad Gita (17.15) encourages us to speak in a way that is both Satyam, truthful, and Hitam, helpful. In the Bhagavatam 1.13, Vidura speaks a difficult truth to Dhritarashtra for awakening detachment within him. Yet, he withholds the news of Krishna’s departure from the Pandavas to avoid distraction from his mission to elevate his brother. By thinking prayerfully and carefully, we all can infuse our speech with the most effective balance between being truthful and helpful.
