Few things agitate the human heart as much as discrimination and unfair treatment. The aspiration for equality—the deeply held belief that everyone should be treated with dignity—is an almost unquestionable ideal in modern society. However, if we look strictly at nature, biology, or evolution, there is absolutely no foundation for equality.
From a purely biological perspective, no two beings are equal; even identical twins possess variations. If we evaluate human beings using any material metric—whether it is height, weight, physical strength, or education—we will never find true equality.
Historically, attempting to base human value strictly on biology has led to catastrophic results. Theories like Social Darwinism falsely proposed a biological hierarchy among human races, suggesting that some were inherently “fitter” than others. This biological reductionism was used by tyrants to justify horrific atrocities and genocides, systematically targeting those deemed “unfit” by the oppressors.
At a biological level, there is simply no rational foundation for equality. The intuitive emotion that dehumanization is wrong is powerful, but where is its foundation in reality? The answer lies in our spiritual core.
Our existence is multilevel. On the material side, we have our varying functional identities and distinct biological differences. But underlying all of this is our spiritual side. At our core, each one of us is a spiritual being, and it is only on this spiritual level that we are all truly equal. The Bhagavad Gita teaches that our fundamental identity goes beyond our changing biology. When we recognize this shared spiritual core, we finally find the solid, unshakable foundation for the universal equality and dignity we instinctively crave.
