‘Our heart beats for immortality’ refers to our metaphorical heart – the seat of our emotions – and its innate longing to live on forever.

‘Our heart beats towards mortality’ refers to our biological heart and its relentless ticking down to exhaustion and destruction.

This jarring contrast between what we long for and what we have to live with is our fundamental existential crisis. We feel that life is our inalienable right, yet reality can divest us of life at a moment’s notice – or even without that. One road crash and it’s all over.

The chasm between our longing and our living originates in misidentification.

Or is it really?

Gita wisdom declares that it isn’t.

It explains that the chasm between our longing and our living originates in misidentification. The Gita (02.18) indicates that we are indestructible souls within our destructible bodies. Due to forgetfulness of our spiritual identity, we misidentify with our bodies. And this misidentification makes us desire at the material level the immortality that is naturally ours at the spiritual level, just as an amnesiac millionaire starving as a pauper desires the delicacies natural in his earlier life.

However, the material level of reality is by its very nature temporary. So it can never fulfill our longing for immortality, no matter how earnestly, fervently and desperately we strive for it.

Still, we can fulfill that longing by redirecting our consciousness from the material level to the spiritual level. And such redirection doesn’t have to be a dry abnegation of everything material – it can be a dynamic utilization of the material in the service of the spiritual once we understand that the supreme spiritual reality, Krishna, is our eternal object of love.

By training ourselves in this life to love Krishna, we can attain his personal abode, where our longing for immortality is fulfilled perfectly.
