To be present in the present, we need to learn to focus gradually and incrementally. If our mind is wandering, we can bring it back to any one thing in the present. We can focus on the physical situation around us. Maybe, if we’re talking with someone and we are not able to focus on that person’s speech, we can focus on any one characteristic of their speech. Maybe we can focus on some thought inside us about the importance of that conversation. The Bhagavad-gita, in the sixth chapter, states that gradually, step by step, we get one foothold into the present, and then it will become a stronghold. Over time, we will become fully absorbed in the present.
