Faith is the readiness to wait for the full picture that God is forever unveiling before us.

We often use metaphors, consciously or unconsciously, to understand life. Some people may see life as an adventure, a tragedy, a treasure hunt, or even a mathematical problem. Many of these metaphors help us interpret our lives in terms of what we do, what we should be doing, and how we can face life’s challenges with the right attitude. While these perspectives can help some people find meaning at certain stages, the best metaphors are those grounded in the most complete understanding of reality—one that includes God’s role and actions in our lives.

One helpful metaphor is that of life as a picture that is continuously being unveiled by God. We only see the part that has already been uncovered, and we often try to make sense of the entire picture based on that partial view. In reality, life is more like a series of pictures than a single frame. Yet, we often become fixated on the picture right in front of us, forgetting that other pictures have come before it and that many more are yet to be unveiled.

If the current picture seems unsatisfactory or even dreadful, it’s natural to feel disappointment or even despair. But faith enables us to wait for the future pictures in this ongoing series. The Bhagavad Gita (4.39) declares that it is the faithful who gain knowledge, suggesting that real understanding comes not only from intellectual analysis but also from the patience and openness of faith.

While we might increase knowledge in professional or functional areas through intellectual efforts, we cannot fully know God’s plan for us or how He will manifest it in our lives. We may understand God’s ultimate purpose—to lead us to the highest welfare—but the specific steps of this journey remain unknown and unknowable to us.

This is where faith empowers us. Faith prevents us from catastrophizing about today’s events, reminding us that this moment, however challenging, will pass. Even if the present picture before us isn’t wonderful or is downright dreadful, faith reassures us that, by remaining devoted and patient, God will eventually reveal a brighter picture and lead us toward the brightest future: a life of eternal love with Him.
