Faith in God’s Protection
Faith in God’s protection inspires us to accept responsibility for serving Him without becoming excessively attached to expectations about the outcomes. True faith combines a readiness to act in alignment with divine will and trust in God’s wisdom, timing, and methods. This dual aspect of faith—accepting responsibility and letting go of expectations—is crucial for deepening our connection with God.
Accepting Responsibility
Faith begins with recognizing our eternal role as parts of the Lord, as declared in the Bhagavad-gita (15.7). This understanding implies that we always have a role to play in His divine plan and that we should be ready to fulfill that role.
Accepting responsibility means:
- Taking up service opportunities that align with our abilities and circumstances.
- Resourcefully acquiring the tools, knowledge, and skills necessary for effective service.
- Avoiding the tendency to refuse service, for such reluctance often reflects a lack of faith in the Lord’s providence and guidance.
When we accept responsibility in this spirit, we express confidence that the Lord can work through us, regardless of our limitations. Faith does not mean waiting passively for divine intervention; it means actively participating in His plan while depending on Him for guidance and strength.
Letting Go of Expectations
Faith in God’s protection also involves letting go of rigid expectations about how His protection should manifest. While responsibility focuses on our actions, faith helps us release our attachment to specific results.
Our expectations can become obstacles when:
- Results do not align with what we anticipated.
- Doubts about God’s protection arise, weakening our resolve to serve.
- We become fixated on particular outcomes and lose sight of the deeper purpose of service.
Faith means trusting that God knows what is best and that He will protect us according to His wisdom, not necessarily according to our preferences. By relinquishing attachment to specific results, we demonstrate submission to His will and confidence in His higher plan.
This principle is exemplified by Arjuna in Bhagavad-gita 18.73. After hearing Krishna’s teachings, Arjuna does not negotiate, bargain, or set conditions. He simply declares his readiness to act: “I will do your will.” His faith is expressed not through demands for guarantees, but through willing obedience.
The Balance of Faith
Many people mistakenly think that faith means expecting God to produce a desired outcome. Yet genuine faith is not measured by how strongly we believe a particular result will occur. Rather, it is measured by our willingness to serve regardless of the result.
Faith enables us to embrace responsibility without anxiety and to relinquish expectations without apathy. We act wholeheartedly because service is our responsibility, and we remain peaceful because results belong to God.
When responsibility and trust work together, spiritual life becomes both dynamic and stable. We do our part with sincerity while allowing God to do His part according to His perfect wisdom.
Summary
Faith involves accepting responsibility:
- Recognizing our eternal role as parts of the Lord and embracing our place in His plan.
- Taking up service opportunities with readiness and resourcefulness.
- Avoiding refusal to serve, which reflects a lack of trust in God’s guidance and providence.
Faith also involves letting go of expectations:
- Trusting God’s wisdom, timing, and methods rather than imposing our own conditions.
- Avoiding attachment to specific outcomes, timelines, or circumstances.
- Remaining focused on service rather than becoming consumed by results.
Arjuna’s example demonstrates balanced faith:
- He accepted responsibility by agreeing to fight according to Krishna’s will.
- He let go of expectations about how Krishna’s protection would manifest.
- His surrender shows how faith, submission, and action can coexist harmoniously.
Think It Over
- How is your faith demonstrated by accepting responsibility? What specific responsibility can you embrace to express your faith?
- How is your faith reflected in your willingness to release expectations? What expectations can you let go of to deepen your faith?
- Why is letting go of expectations an essential part of faith? Reflect on an experience where releasing expectations strengthened your connection with God.
