Bg 18.24
yat tu kāmepsunā karma
sāhaṅkāreṇa vā punaḥ
kriyate bahulāyāsaṁ
tad rājasam udāhṛtam
Synonyms:
yat — that which; tu — but; kāma–īpsunā — by one with desires for fruitive results; karma — work; sa–ahaṅkāreṇa — with ego; vā — or; punaḥ — again; kriyate — is performed; bahula–āyāsam — with great labor; tat— that; rājasam — in the mode of passion; udāhṛtam — is said to be.
Translation:
But action performed with great effort by one seeking to gratify his desires, and enacted from a sense of false ego, is called action in the mode of passion.
tad rājasam udāhṛtam, that is in mode of passion. What is that?
yat tu kāmepsunā karma, the work which is done with worldly desires, so one has kama for the fruits of the work,
and
sāhaṅkāreṇa vā punaḥ,
āhaṅkāra means arrogance thinking that I am the doer.
In 18.17 Krishna said:
yasya nāhaṅkṛto bhāvo
buddhir yasya na lipyate
one who don’t have any ahankara will not be bound
now He is talking about sāhaṅkāreṇa vā punaḥ, when a person is having ahankar
kriyate bahulāyāsaṁ, bahulā means after great trouble that which is involving sever labor so this is referring to Ugra Karma,
Ugra Karma can be in passion and also in ignorance depending on activity and the consciousness in which the activity is done.
kriyate bahulāyāsaṁ, so work done in passion and ignorance is not the same but that which is done in passion goes down to ignorance after sometime.
Demons work hard but cannot do good to even themselves leave about others, (daemons while churning milk ocean struggle because they wanted to hold Vasuki from mouth side)
So in work in passion one drags to do more and more and more and one doesn’t satisfy no matter how much work one does.
